Daniel Bortnick is a native Chicagoan, an avid Cubs fan, and a proud husband and #twindad. After growing up on Chicago's north side, Daniel attended Walter Payton College Preparatory High School and was part of it's first graduating class in 2004. While in high school, he participated in a number of clubs including Math Team where he was on the Illinois State Championship winning team in 2004. Additionally while in high school, he earned the Eagle Scout rank from the Boy Scouts of America.
In 2008, Daniel graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana with a degree in Mathematics and a specialization in secondary education. He minored in both music and psychology. During his time at Purdue, he was the president of the Purdue Mathematics Education Club during his junior and senior years.
In 2009, Daniel returned to Chicago and began teaching at ACE Technical Charter High School (which later rebranded as ACE Amandla Charter School) on Chicago's south side. Daniel was the Mathematics Department Chair at ACE Technical High School from 2010 to 2015. He coached Chess Team and was the head coach of ACE's FIRST Robotics Team: Team 1850 the Mechanicats.
During the summers of 2012 through 2014, Daniel was one of three Lead Teachers at SAMC (Science and Math Camp) run by the Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) at the University of Chicago. Daniel designed a curriculum focusing on problem solving in combinatorics for 25 high school students between 10th and 12th grade. Each summer, Daniel gave coaching feedback to two pre-service residents from the Urban Teacher Education Program in classroom management and curriculum development.
Daniel is currently a mathematics teacher at UIC College Prep High School part of Noble Schools a Charter School Network in Chicago, IL. In addition to teaching, he is a Math Team coach.
Daniel is currently a member of NCTM (The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics), MMC (The Metropolitan Mathematics Club of Chicago), and the Problem Solving Inquiry Group run by the University of Chicago.
